Emergency Relief Efforts for Flooded Children's Home, 30 Children Displaced in Dimapur, India

On June 23, heavy monsoon rains led to massive flooding in the town of Dimapur, Nagaland, located in the far northeastern part of India. Among those who have been affected by the flooding are ACTION missionaries Daniel and Shanye Shayan, their family, and the 30 children in the children’s home the family runs.

Known as Neighbourhood Children’s Home, this ministry provides underprivileged children with food, clothing, simple lodging, and primary education – all of which the kids were lacking in the poor remote villages of Nagaland and Assam from which they came. The vision of the home is to nurture the children in the knowledge of the Word of God and to provide vocational job-oriented training so they can be self-supported in their future.

Currently, however, that vision and the children’s lives are in jeopardy as they have been misplaced from their home due to the floods. As you can see in the pictures, most of the buildings and property of Neighbourhood Children’s Home are knee-deep in water.

In an email sent on June 28, asking for fervent prayer and immediate assistance, Daniel wrote:

“It was on June 23, early morning about 2:00 a.m., there was heavy rain fall which created havoc for the entire Dimapur town, especially the locality in which we live. Within an hour water entered into all the houses we have in the compound, including the children's dormitory, kitchen, Sunday School room, and the church. Within four hours our compound and surrounding areas were badly flooded and the children were in shock.”

A day later Daniel wrote again saying, “By the grace of God, things have been normalizing!” This is, of course, good news, yet their ministry is now in need of relief funds to begin repairing the buildings that suffered heavy water damage at their compound. He estimates that the repairs will cost about US$3,000.

Furthermore, Daniel says that due to the massive flooding, they will not be able to receive any government grants or aid for the next five months – money they rely on for the everyday needs at the Home. Daniel writes:

“We are in a big crisis to support these children for their daily food and study materials. We are in urgent need of about US$4,080 per month for at least four months to carry on the ministry to children; until we raise some local support.”

ACTION is immediately sending US$4,400, which is all that we have on hand in our disaster relief fund. This should help meet the immediate needs and kick start the repair work needed in the Children’s Home. Much more is still needed, however, to sustain and support the children and their helpers in the months to come.
